THE HILLS ARE ALIVE
The romance starts long before you reach Mayapott: somewhere around the time you forgot all about that motion sickness, switch off the air-conditioning in the car and roll down the windows to breathe
in the crisp, fresh air. It quietly engulfs you as you start to focus on the breathtaking beauty of the setting – expansive green hills covered in mist standing proud against blue skies and dotted with waterfalls that shimmer in the sun.

It is somewhere in the middle of all this splendour that you arrive at Mayapott, a boutique plantation villa. Surrounded by 140 acres of cardamom plantation, this charming property is built around the area’s natural rock formations. Bisecting it is a pretty little waterfall and brook, which runs the length
of the property. The place is interestingly designed, with the intention of bringing a bit of the outdoors into your stay.

The three pleasantly-decorated rooms, which feature cut-stone walls and slanted tiled roofs, have just a touch of rustic charm and look out onto the meandering stream. Amazingly, it’s the loos that literally bring the outside world in. Partially open-air, some with a tree growing within and others with rock formations jutting in, a delightful aspect of the bathrooms is the smooth river pebbles that make up the floor. The villa suite, which has the most intimate setting of the lot, is located at a small distance from the main buildings.

Accessed via a private wooden walkway, the villa suite turns into your own little haven. A pretty little bridge connects the rooms with the other side of the property – it’s the perfect place for relaxing and sipping a cuppa with your partner and listening to the water flowing below. And while you’ll be quite content with lazing around, a leisurely amble around the plantation is quite interesting as well, especially if Bibin Sasi, the manager, joins you (free). Having grown up in this region, he’s full of fun tidbits about the plantation and the flora and fauna of the area – he’ll pick the hottest pepper and the sweetest mangosteens for you to taste;
